DooM - The Movie
We just returned from the cinema. After getting the information, that DooM will only be running today and tomorrow and tomorrow my girlfriend couldn't go - quick action: "Move, huaaa!" ;)
I have been waiting for this movie since it was announced the first time - more than 10 years ago! I was very sceptic of this movie. Hopefully they get it right! Then I saw the first trailer some months ago and I was really, really disappointed. Not one guy - a group. Not a green uniform with a helmet - black without a helmet. And so on... Well, then later there appeared another trailer and my hopes rose again... seemed to be pretty good. That this would be a dumb popcorn-movie was very clear to me - but I didn't want anything too intelligent from it either - you know the game, do you? ;)
Well, that I had to watch this movie either way was without question!
The movie is a mixture of Alien, very little Starship Troopers and a lot DooM! :)
Let's forget about my former disappointments - in DooM they start as a marine group(although you will never know about them, if you don't have a look at README.txt ;) ) and in DooM3 you have a black uniform and no helmet! ;)
The movie starts with the attack of aliens and a scientist, who makes an emergency call. This scientists name is - Dr. Carmack! ;)
Then we go to the marine headquarters with some weird but sympathic marines, they don't even seem too stereotype. During the movie you really get to like them. Then we jump into the action quickly, they get sent out and teleport to UAC's Mars facility. That teleporting is actually nicely done. The Mars facility really resembles the games' levels, players of the first DooM will think here or there: "I know that architecture!" And players of DooM3 will additionally recognize the information displays and 'textures'. The main entrance area resembles the first game level a lot.
Enter the quarantine zone: with the original door sound of the first DooM game - at least I felt at home! ;)
Sarge's (yep, resembles Quake, doesn't it?) comment to that: "Game time!"
Now a pretty usable story unfolds, with a lot of splatter, some funny comments and good suspense. I can't say much about the story sadly, since I didn't yet play through DooM3 - but it isn't the original DooM's story at all. Ah, did I mention the the Mars outside shots are exactly like in the game? No, I don't think so - but they are really perfect!
After everybody is dead (except for our main hero, Sarge and the mandatory woman), we get a nice fight between Sarge and the hero, since Sarge got 'bitten' by an Imp. Yes, right, bitten... Imps don't throw fireballs, they shoot their tongues at their victims to 'infect' them and make them turn into monsters. Well, I would have rather seen the burning skulls... but it wasn't a really disturbing difference to the games - surprisingly!
The real highlight of the movie comes before the end-fight though! I was very happy that they dared to do it - and even more, that they got it perfectly right! It's a some minutes 1st person sequence resembling the game as much as ever possible. Take your console down, set FOV to 90, activate God-Mode and go for it! It's really great, with elements from the game here and there, with the small field of view, everything you see is the wall before peeking around corners, the movement feels right - it's just great! :)
What else to say, shortly... Yes, the BFG is in, we get to see some other known weapons, the end credits seem to be done with the DooM3-engine, we only get to see two monsters from DooM, there appears another scientist named "Willits" and actually a lot more to say... go look youself! ;)
And - favourite quote from the movie goes like that..
Sarge: "I was supposed to be immortal!"
So, for every DooM/Quake/ID Software Fan, this movie is a must! For every popcorn Action/Sci-Fi/Horror-Fan a usable and fun evening filler. For people, who can't cope with disgusting scenes and action it's a no-no. All you others:
Go have a look at it - the bigger the screen, the better! :)
